Why Do Women Only Make Up One Third Of The Parliamentarians
Why do women only make up one-fifth of the parliamentarians? Women are underrepresented in politics, but gender balance is improving. Increasing participation of women in politics takes a paradigm shift. The three waves of feminism have helped propel the womenââ¬â¢s movement in the world. Hence, some people believe in a fourth wave. In addition, women have gained electoral power via the proportional representation electoral system, which is more favourable to women than majority-plurality representation. These waves of feminism focused primarily on voting, reproductive, and ââ¬Ëidentityââ¬â¢ rights, respectively, but it simply began with ââ¬Å"equal rights for womenâ⬠(MacLean, G., Wood, D. 2014). The goal of the first wave was ââ¬Å"to open up opportunities for women,â⬠with a main focus on suffrage. It formally began in New York in 1848, when 300 men and women rallied together for the ââ¬Å"cause of equality for women,â⬠that was mostly driven by ââ¬Å"middle class white womenâ⬠(Rampton, M., 2014). The right of women to vote was known as the womenââ¬â¢s suffrage. It took the activists and reformers of this suffrage 72 years to win that right since it was nearly impossible with the disagreements threatening to weaken the movement.
